On this week’s Hawaii Matters, Devon welcomes Marni Reynolds and Carly Gaffey from the Na Kupuna Makamae center to talk about one of the programs that they have been offering that is getting more and more popular, sound baths. It’s a whole new way to experience sound and it’s healing properties. They also discuss the healing properties of “gentle” yoga, and how Na Kupuna Makamae is helping the elderly and the succeeding generations work and play together to keep all ages healthy and happy.

Please join Devon this Sunday as he welcomes Phyllis Look to the program to talk about “forest bathing.”  It’s not so much about getting your body clean, so much as cleaning your mind and your soul, and getting close to nature again so that you can feel more centered and relaxed as you go about dealing with the hustle and bustle of life.  It’s a fascinating practice, and you get to learn all about it this weekend on Hawaii Matters.

This Sunday, it’s a 2 for 1 show as Devon welcomes Sheryl Ferido and Kurt Kendro to talk about the upcoming Law Enforcement Week activities and their reasons behind bringing “Light Hawaii Blue” here.  “Light Hawaii Blue is, a new initiative asking Hawaii Residents to turn their porch lights blue in honor of all law enforcement in the islands.  In our second show, Dr. Ligaya Stice, Executive Director for the I’m A Bright Kid Foundation, joins Devon to talk about the Summer Arts Program for students as well as upcoming productions that the organization is planning, as well as sharing some of the things they are planning for the future of the organization.

Dr. Monique Canonico, a neurologist from Kaiser Permanente, joins Devon on today’s show to discuss strokes.  She talks about some of their causes, how best to prevent them, and also the latest advances in treatment.

This week, Devon welcomes Thomas Remington from the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and Ruhul Amin from NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center to talk about the upcoming Fishers Forum on June 25th at the Ala Moana Hotel.  They will discuss the status of the Western Pacific Regional fishery and how advances in technology are helping to ensure enough fish for the present and the future of Hawaii.

This week, a very special guest steps into the Hawaii Matters studios, recently crowned 2019 Miss Hawaii, Nikki Holbrook.  She speaks with Devon about the process of running for Miss Hawaii and about Service Nurtures All People, or S.N.A.P, the organization she founded to inspire kids to do more public service.

06/30/19 – Jacce Mikulanec, President and Executive Director Japanese Cultural of Hawaii

On this Sunday’s Hawaii Matters, Devon welcomes Jacce Mikulanec, President and Executive Director Japanese Cultural of Hawaii.  He talks about some of the JCCH’s programs and discusses his recent work with the Honouliuli national historical project, which preserves the Honouliuli internment camp that was used in World War II to house Japanese Americans during the war.

09/22/19 – Nancy Kriedman of the Domestic Violence Action Center and David Tumilowica from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii 

An important edition of Hawaii Matters as Devon welcomes Nancy Kriedman of the Domestic Violence Action Center and David Tumilowica from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii to discuss Domestic Violence.  They discuss how people who are victims of Domestic Violence can get help, and how more people can be upstanders instead of bystanders about this issue.  Additionally, as October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, they talk about the 25th Annual Men’s March Against Violence which is coming up October 3rd, and how you can participate.

Our guest is Susan Amina. She is the Cancer Care Coordinator for Kaiser Permanente. October is breast cancer awareness month. We cover some national and local statistics on breast cancer. Risk factors, various types of prevention measures, treatment procedures, the different levels and types of breast cancer. We also talk about the process from diagnosis to recovery. And in addition to the traditional treatments available, what are some of the advancements being made of in this area.
